Frankly My Dear, I Don’t Give A Damn!

My Dad gifted me a very interesting book for Christmas, Predictably Irrational By Dan Ariely. I am already through to chapter 13 (lucky for me by the way).

There is a chapter on there about keeping our options open which I found very interesting. The chapter about procrastination is also interesting but that is for another day.

Dan recounts the story of Xiang Yu and his army at war againt the Qin Dynasty. He ordered the ships and all cooking pots destroyed leaving the soldiers with no option but to push forward and win. Flourish or perish. One guess as to what they did…

It occured to me that closing off options is the way I have always looked at life and this is a critical key to our success; failure IS NOT AN OPTION at Kraya.

When Stagecoach initially approached us in 2003 and asked us to build megabus.com over a very short timescale, we stepped up and did it. Since then, there have been numerous occassions where we were called upon to do things that would, in most people’s view be impossible.

I don’t really know how other people view it but my perspective is simple. There is no choice but to do it and to do it well. There is no balance to be struck; there are no halfway measures; everything else comes second – it really is all or nothing…

and when I’m asked, what to do while I’m off at work: “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn”
